Visiting Memphis—The Metaphysical Trip
Before Thanksgiving, we took a short trip to Memphis. It wasn’t our first time visiting since moving to Louisville, and it’s certainly not our last. We had two very packed days full of work, fun and bite-sized self reflections.
Visiting Memphis, to us, is like visiting a very busy grandmother. While she’s cooking or preparing something of some sort, she gives you practical advice on life, tells you to keep doing what you’re doing, and reminds you that absolutely no one can tell you what you can’t do. Thanks Memphis. We always learn so much from your subtle wisdom.
Among the things we crammed into our time there, Mark guest spotted, seeing familiar tattoo clientele again. We hung out with tattoo OGs and our extended tattoo family at Rook x Raven Tattoo Creative. Turkeys traveled on ice with us to Memphis, and were quickly handed out to customers, kind strangers and friends.
Shelby Farms Park was an awesome surprise! So many new, modern buildings scattered around! We meditated on a gigantic industrial swing, that coexisted as a huge minimal sculpture. Personally, besides seeing friends, this was the highlight of my trip. The weather was perfect.
Maybe it’s the familiar faces, the new construction happening, or the usual bars full of interesting conversation and good music. There’s something about it that’s wildly motivational. It might be the act of traveling and moving outside of the normal day to day. Either way, we’re excited to keep pushing on with DORK Tattoo Parlour and DORK projects.
Seeing the changes brewing up in Memphis, and how at the same time, not much has changed, opened my eyes again. You can still run into familiar faces literally anywhere, have a conversation with another MCA artist, visit nostalgic places like the shack on Madison. I like how the wall at the Madison space was tagged so neatly (did you have to use silver though? I guess orange, or turquoise wasn’t an option). We always see so much potential in Memphis, and continue to rack our brains on how to connect the two locations.
We didn’t get to see everyone (*cough* you guys know who you are *cough*), we love you, fam! <3
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
