An abundance of youth in low income neighborhoods are cemented within the revolving door of violence and disparity. Many community centers push young people from programming after the age of 18–with little skills which can sustain a legitimate SOURCE OF INCOME.
Support the growth of a new movement. Find out How below.
Using art, we will elevate the chances of success for young potential artists, and guide them in mastering the skills to be worthy competitors in the city’s economy. We will give youth the power to craft their own destiny using fine art.
THE PLAN FOR ACTION
Over the years, DORK has established wonderful connections to artists, musicians and peace advocates in Memphis, Tennessee and Louisville, Kentucky. We have a plan to work with street peace campaign-crusaders: No More Red Dots (NMRD)–locating and connecting with youth in Louisville, who are in need of alternatives to their current lifestyles. Joining along with various young individuals who are willing to take part in the change, we also have experience working with creators in Memphis, who are interested in participating positively in the scene here in Louisville.
DORK’s A.G.E isn’t stationary to one location–the desire for change, and the need for support can be sustained anywhere. We are currently leasing a location on Portland Avenue, and are seeking to lease another space within the Crescent Hill/ St. Matthews area. We believe taking deprived youth out of their current circumstance, and into one of the complete opposite, can be a very memorable and fantastic experience. This is one of the best ways you can positively impact one's life, by taking them out of forced contentment and presenting something new.
Workshops, events and commissions will sustain DORK’s A.G.E. Educational courses, gallery space, and room for selling work will be available at the DORK location for free. Each student will have supplies and space to create, display and sell their work. Transportation to the space will be included given that we have support from the city, or receive enough financing to purchase a work vehicle.
Workshops include the following:
Intro to Tattoos - provided by Mark Castle, a licensed artist with 10 years experience
Marketing and Self Promoting Artwork
Overtime, more courses will be added based on the desire and need from students.
Students will be able to exhibit their work in the gallery space, and on a monthly basis, we will have public events and gallery showings. Artwork can also be displayed for sale by students.
WHO WE ARE
DORK creates and sells artwork, as well as providing space for rent towards musical performances and artist studios at 2010 Portland Avenue. We are a small business that wishes to work with young creators in Louisville who have been forgotten and forced out of local community centers, which have enriched their lives for so many years. We are Fine Artists who firmly believe in supporting the creators, the musicians; the originators and the inventors.
Mark Brown and Doree Woods are the owners and operators of DORK; we are emerging artists with our Bachelors in Fine Art from Memphis College of Art. We are always seeking knowledge in creative expression, and learning from our own experience–understand the importance of sustainability for young creators.
We have been working with local community center, the Neighborhood House since the Summer of 2015 teaching youth how to paint, create and bind books, screen-print t-shirts, design logos and build pinhole cameras.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
DORK's A.G.E curriculum will be a significant–but fantastic–undertaking. We will need a few things to get the curriculum underway for Louisville:
Another location; we have spotted the perfect space for the task in the St.Matthews area, close to Crescent Hill. It has ample space for workshops and educational art courses, as well as a ready-to-go gallery space for young artists to show and sell their work.
Travel finances; we will need a vehicle to help transport youth to and from the location, (if they don’t have their own transportation), or the ability to provide passes for TARC transportation to and from the location during work hours.
Equipment/Furniture; the new location will be for the most part empty. We have a few pieces of equipment but will need better tools, tables, and supplies to teach workshops and classes successfully.
- Art Supplies; we will need the essentials to complete artwork with an awesome standard of quality.
Any amounts received from sponsors and DORK product sales will be towards the above list. We have the drive, the perfect location spotted, the knowledge, and the youth who are seeking new alternatives–all we need now are the funds.
Where we are so far
THIS IS OUR PASSION; THIS IS WHAT WE DO–BEING AN ARTIST IS FAR FROM A SELFISH PROFESSION, WE WISH TO SHARE WHAT WE’VE LEARNED WITH OTHERS, AND TO SUPPORT AND UNITE CREATORS FROM ALL FACETS OF LIFE.
